Harolds 25K

August 16, 2015   This was the first year for the Howards 25K. (15.54 miles)
It was a benefit for the Allegany Animal Shelter.

It was a point to point race on the Great Allegany Passage.  It started in Frostburg MD and ended in Cumberland MD.
Packet pick up was Saturday night. They also had a pasta dinner, but I had to work, so my husband picked up my packet.
The morning of the race my husband dropped me off at the start and then he went to church.

There was a 4 hour time limit for this race. My goal was to keep each mile less than 15 mm.

Sid Busch, the gentleman who runs with a flag and honors a fallen hero at every race, ran with us.
He ran for Adam Conn and his dog Bruno.

The race started at 8 AM. It perfect weather. The first 12 miles were nice and shaded by the trees over the trail. The remainder were still on the trail, but no shade.

I was pretty much alone after mile one. I could see a group ahead of me, but for the most part it was me, my gymboss, and nature. At mile 6 I could see a flag waving in the air in front of me. I continued to do my intervals, stopped at a porta potty. and was slowly catching the flag. At mile 8 I caught him, asked if I could take a picture with him. HE is the sweetest kindest most humble person!! His face looked pale and I asked if he was ok. He said he was having stomach upset and was having a hard time. I asked if he would be ok if I walked with him to the next water stop and then if he wanted  he could catch a ride to the finish line.
He didnt have any water, I had my camel back. We were set. I turned off my gymboss and listened to his navy stories, talked a bit political, talked about many races. He has run uncountable half marathons, and will run his 200th marathon at the air force in September. Mile 10 was the next water stop. He watered up and we continued.
It was an honor to walk the last 7 1/2 miles with him.  We finished after the 4 hour cut off. Several of the first finishers came back to finish with Sid. It was so nice to see them honor him. Sid and I ran across the finish line together. It was an honor.

There was LOTS off food left over. AND I GOT CHOCOLATE MILK!!!! Two whole cartons!! There was also donuts and pizza, but I couldnt handle that.

Great race, great organization. I will most definitely do this one again!
