Thankful

My heart goes out to all those who have lost family, friends and power, in this storm!!
I pray for those who are evacuating Nursing Homes, ICU's, NICU's.  Those nurses and doctors who had to go to work!!  The EMS, the firefighters, The Police Officers.

I may complain about the water in my basement and the snow in the neighborhood, my husband sitting behind a wrecked semi for an hour on an off ramp. BUT, I am so thankful that I have electricity! that my family members are safe! and that I have warmth!

It started out as rain on Monday first thing in the morning. Then the snow started around 3PM. Its still snowing, but it has tapered off. Approx another 6 to 8 inches to fall.

This is the Snow Emergency Route.  Down to one lane beside my parents house.  We also had some lightening and thunder during the night. Every time that happens we have blue snow.  Im sure there's a scientific reason for it, but every time, it just amazes me!!!

Sunday

Today I did my Virtual 5K for Colton. Thanks Rachelle for hosting!

Thanks to Hurricane Sandy it was raining when I got home from church so I opted for my treadmill.
3.1 miles in 40:56
Todays training run actually called for 5.5 miles so I hopped back on and did and 1.5 (didnt make it to 5.5 today)  My legs were still a bit sore from Hershey last week. 


Weigh in: 194.8 up 2 lbs.

Tuesday: 3mile
Wednesday: 3 mile
Thursday: 3 mile
Friday rest
Saturday: 3 mile

I think I want to take some of my running days and make them cross training days.

Coltons Army and Pile on The Miles

Colton is my friend Suzy's son.  His is 12 years old and here is what he has gone through within the past 3 years:

-Diagnosed with hypo-diploid Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.) on 9/11/09 
-Bone Marrow Transplant 1/6/10 
-Relapsed 12/20/10 
-Stem Cell Transplant 3/5/11 
-One year follow up - shows his body in REMISSION!! 3/22/12 
-19 months of remission & cancer strikes for the 3rd time 
**Starting chemo on 10/23/12 and preparation for 3rd transplant 

We found out last week that the cancer is back for the 3rd time.  At this point, all treatments are experimental.  Doctors don't have answers, so they are trying something that hasn't been tried before.  Unfortunately, this means that insurance is sketchy.  Insurance doesn't like experimental anything.  

After the thousands of dollars my friends have raised for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, this time they are the ones who need a fundraiser.  
 

So, I am hosting a virtual race, "Colton's Army Virtual 5k", to raise money for Colton's Army.  Colton's Army is a group of hundreds, maybe thousands of people who love and support Colton and his family and pray every day for him to be cured.  All proceeds will go directly to Colton's medical fund.  Everyone can participate, but, since this is a fundraiser, in order to be eligible for prizes, you need to make a donation of at least $10.

Hershey Half


Hershey Park Half Marathon.
See that smile? Thats because I havent seen the hills yet!!  We all started by choosing our own corral. They had signs hanging on the wall, and you stood with your pace  group. I stood with the 12, 13, 14 pace. The very last one said, 'other'.  I wasnt quite sure I wanted to be an 'other'. Waiting, waiting, waiting, After the 'start' by an amazingly spunky young boy from the Childrens Miracle Network, it took 5 minutes for me to get to the start line. Speaking of the spunky one, as I was starting he was saying, only 13 to go, hahahahah. See you at the finish line. Some guy behind me said, 'this is more like the Hershey shuffle.'  

Somewhere in the first few miles there were children from the Miracle Network. It was so cool. Hard to not shed tears! (The proceeds went The Childrens Miracle Network).They were cheering and clapping, and thanking us. 
But then the hills started. The water stops were almost three miles apart. So thankful I had a water belt!!
The crowd support was amazing!! The kids from the Milton Hershey School were along the route, cheering, hollering. People hollering your name. The Leukemia Society had lots of people in purple running. I was so thankful to be amongst the purple shirts, cause they had lots of support. I wish I would've had my camera! 
My favorite sign, "Worst Parade Ever". Also loved the sign beside a church, "they shall run and not be weary" 
At mile 11 or 12 they were handing out Fast Breaks. There was no way I could eat it! Barfing chocolate is not something I want to do. I took mine and shoved it in my pocket!

After we crossed the finish line we were given our medal, and handed a lunch box. It had a delicious cookie, an apple, a recovery bar, and a bottle of water.   I immediately went to the turf and stretched and drank my water. I was exhausted, but felt so good!! 

Pros:
  •  Great crowd support
  • Loved the medal
  • VERY EASY packet pick up
  • Great post race food and lunch bag
  • Text to my phone with my finishing time within 10 minutes of crossing the finish line
Cons:
  • Need more water stations
  • I wasnt prepared for that many hills (my fault, not the races!)
My Garmin data was deleted on the bus ride home. So I dont have the details. I do know that it said I ran 13.31 miles. (I obviously didnt effectively run the tangents!!)
Time: 2:58.30  (5 minutes shy of my PR) But this was a hillier course and I was pleased with my time)
Pace: 13.37  I really wish I had my garmin info so I could see what my time was at my 13.1 spot!!

Cupcake Virtual

Run with Jess hosted her 2nd annual cupcake virtual.

I had to run inside on the treadmill today. Why is it that Im always slower on the mill than  outside??!!?

Makes no sense!!

Had the best smoothie ever right afterwards for lunch! Strawberries, bananas, almond milk, peanut butter, protein powder and ice.

This weekend I head to Hershey for my half marathon. A bus load of my coworkers, well, I don't actually know any of them, is leaving for the expo on Saturday morning. We will spend the day at Hershey Park, sleep, run Sunday morning, shower and then head back home. (The doctors office I work out of, is owned by a huge hospital that is an hour away. The hospital fitness center organized the trip as part of the get healthy campaign.)

Cancer Sucks!!

The majority of the runs that I participate with are for causes. I get to help raise money and get fit at the same time.

Right now two blogger friends are hosting virtual runs/walks to raise money for/in honor of friends affected by cancer.

Suz and Allen from Cows and Lasers and Everything in Between   are raising money in honor of their sister in law Tanya. Do you know anyone affected by breast cancer?
I am running in memory of my aunt Mary, honor of my aunt Mabel, and honer of friend Sharon.

Hiker Mom for Livin The Fit Life is raising money for her friends son Colton. He is battling leukemia! This will be his third time thru treatment.
I am running in honor of my best friend Sheera, and friend Phil.

Friday Frustrations

Friday Frustrations.

Hiker Mom has taught me that its ok to complain, rant, whine.  She has free rant Friday. SO, today is Frustration Friday. 

1. Sitting in a doctors office for TWO hours without an explation. (I work in a doctors office, and anytime the doctor is running more than 15 minutes late, I explain to the waiting patients.)  My daughter had an appointment with the neurologist. We sat in the waiting room for over two hours!! When we finally went to the examination room, we waited another 90 minutes! THANKFULLY, we had our books with us!! When we did finally see her, she explained that she had an emergency at the hospital.

2.  People who complain about the work you do, to your coworkers rather than to you.

3,  Traffic lights that have a no turn on red signs.  It was 10:30 at night in a very small one stoplight town, no cars in sight, and I still sat there for 4 minutes waiting for the light to turn green.

4. CANCER stinks!!

Oakland 5K



Woke up at 6:30 and it was 22 degrees. I really really wanted to crawl back under the covers and stay warm and go back to sleep. BUT, I knew two friends were going to be waiting for me at the starting line. I was not going to wimp out of this run!! This picture was taken after the run at 9:30 AM. and there was still frost on the ground.

I left home at 6:45. My husband decided it was to cold to spectate, and he stayed home. (Cant say I blame him!!!)

My brother has run this race many times in the past, so he 'showed me the way'. I wouldve gotten so lost!!

The start was a bit confusing. We all congregated on the road, and all the sudden we heard a gun. I looked at my friends, and we wondered if that was the start, or if that was a hunter in the woods. The people in front of us started moving so we followed. There was no start line, so I wasnt sure when to start my Garmin. This was the first time Ive run in temps below freezing. The first half mile my lungs hurt!! I looked at my watch and it was saying 10.20 .  HA time to slow down!!! That is not my pace!!
The first 1.5 mile was up a gentle slope. Which was great because the return was down hill.


MR B wanted a sub 30 so bad!! He ended up with a 30.3.

Im so thankful the sun was shining and there was no breeze!!

I enjoyed this run, and realized even at 30 degrees, you still sweat when you run!! (OK yeah, I already knew that).

Summer Struggle

Fall is here. Most of the leaves have turned color and fallen off the trees.
Its getting colder, gave in last week and turned the heater on.

Summer is over and its time to get back to working hard on my weight loss.  As I look back thru my journals I realize that summers are my maintain season. Time to stop maintaining and start losing again!! SO, yesterday I started tracking food again. Today was my first weigh in since The Summer Sizzle hosted by Rochelle.  I totally failed that challenge!!

Todays weigh in 192.8  up 2.8
I really thot it would be higher than that!!!

10K PR But still dead last

Last week I was asked if I wanted to run a 10K for free. UM YES!!! That made two for this past weekend. A first for me.
I learned a lot this weekend. Saturday I learned that local races aren't as intimidating as I made them out to be.
Sunday I learned that being last is ok. Its the one place I never ever wanted to be. EVER. Again, Im so much better at giving advice than taking it!! I kept thinking about this
The 5K and 10K started out together. I was with a whole bunch of people!! I was with a lady who was my pace and I was loving it!! My IPOD fell off my shorts and I had to stop to reattach it, so I feel a little behind her. She turned around at the 5K turnaround. All the sudden I was totally by myself. TOTALLY!!!  All alone. No one in front of me, no one behind me. Around mile 2.5 I heard a car behind me, going VERY SLOWLY!! I looked over my shoulder and recognized THE CAR!! I saw it at the start line, It had a huge sign on the side that said, "10K END of RACE". My heart sank. I was last! Totally last, and this car was announcing it to the whole city. Everyone saw me. Of course miles 3 to 5 were an out an back, and everyone coming back saw me with THE CAR.  A few people waved and shouted encouragement, I wanted the pavement to swallow me up. At mile 4 I saw a man in front of me, and I felt some relief. He wasn't that far away. At the turnaround I hollered over to her that I was sorry!! And she was so very nice!!! She encouraged me and told me not give up. At one point I wanted to stop and walk, but I didnt want to do it with her back there!! SO she kept me going!! Then at mile 5 she pulled up beside me and said another runner from the marathon had been hit by a car and she had to go. In a way I was relieved, but I also realized I didnt push myself quite as hard.

It was little cold at the start!! My mantra, follow the blue line, follow the blue line, follow the blue line!! 
My husband the driver, encourager, and picture takerer. He drove to different intersections and snapped some pictures. It was nice to have him along!! 
I spotted the finish line!!
This time I did a lot of stretching. Usually I do the normal leg stretches, but this time I laid on the ground and did some hip stretches too!! Stretches and sleep make for great recovery!
I could tell that I wasnt at my best. Races on back to back days is a new one for me. BUT, I learned a lot, and wouldnt change it!

Another 5K PR

I love when speed work makes me faster!!
This weekend I did a run (mostly flat)!! and ended up with another 5K PR. 36.23
I dont usually do local runs. Im so intimidated. I feel slow. And Ill know people.
 Im so much better at giving advice than taking it!!
The weather said 100% humidity. Thankfully by race time it dropped down to closer to 85%. 

 This is the group of friends from church talked me into running, and Im so glad I did. I had my first chafing problem. My heart rate monitor rubbed me raw!! (NO PICTURES OF THAT!)

5K PR

Im a bit behind. This run was September 29th. It was a beautiful setting to run a 5K. The fog was still on the water. The leaves were amazing reds and yellows. My daughter usually takes pictures when she walk this race, but due to a bruised knee she wasnt able to participate. 

It was cold!!! But once we started I was regretting the long sleeves. It was a point to point race so my daughter couldnt capture me at the finish line, (so we faked it)  Time 37.39 PR for me.  Last years race was  41.45.  Slowly improving. 

Apples and a Cinnamon Roll, along with hot chocolate at the end.

Flipped my treadmill

OK, not literally. I think 6 miles is the longest Ive ever run inside on my treadmill. My last scheduled long run was on a very cold and wet and nasty day. So inside it was.

As I was going along watching my third episode of Friends, I realized my treadmill timer was at 99 minutes.  All the sudden I realized, what if it shuts down when it hits the end of minute 99. This happened to my daughter once at the gym and  she went flying over the top of the controls.................... I slowed WAY down and watched it flip. It was pretty boring. just started over, BUT, didnt shut down!


It continued to go. No flying over the control panel.  The calories restarted after  999 as well. 
1549 calories and 128 minutes for 10 miles.

Foodie Pen Pal Reveal

This month I received my box from Lorilee. Love the pictures she taped on the inside of the box. (I tore the other one in my excitement to get to the food! (My son is using my camera for a class at school so I had to use my cell phone, hence the blurry pics)





 Loved the spoon that came with the peanut butter and chocolate!! Ate that and the pretzel together. YUM!!! And that apple butter!! Amazing on a warm piece of bread at supper time!














Took the fruit to work as a mid afternoon snack. And the pumpkin bar!
The curry is something I haven't tried yet. She sent me a recipe and I will be trying it the next time my kids are home from college!!
